The Genesis Community Loan Fund
is a critical link in the development of affordable housing
and delivery of services in Maine. Our mission is to bring
together resources to create housing and other economic and
social opportunities for underserved people and communities.
Genesis, a certifed Community Development Financial Institution
(CDFI), is a statewide nonprofit organization that began in
1992. What is a CDFI?
Genesis provides
innovative financing by soliciting low-interest loans from
individuals, churches, corporations and foundations, and then
re-lending the money to nonprofit organizations developing
affordable housing and community facilities in underserved
neighborhoods and needy communities. If requested, Genesis
provides substantial technical assistances to the sponsors
of capital projects that will create housing and community
development opportunities.
Since 1992, the Genesis Fund has made
$10.4 million in loans to 150 projects in Maine. These loans
have created or improved 1040 units of affordable housing
for Maine's most vulnerable populations: single mothers and
their children, low-income working families, the elderly and
disabled, the chronically mentally ill and the homeless. Genesis
has also provided technical assistance to 73 community organizations,
helping them to acquire or develop housing or community facilities
and access state and federal funding.
