The Genesis Fund, dba Genesis Community Loan Fund, was founded in 1991 with assistance from Coastal Enterprises, Inc., the Lilly Endowment and several midcoast faith-based congregations.

In 1996, the Maine Community Loan Fund transferred its assets and loan portfolio to Genesis in order to increase efficiency and impact. In 2001, the Genesis Fund was certified by the US Department of the Treasury as a Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI). What is a CDFI?
