AUGUST 2004

Genesis receives a $5,500 grant from Maine Community Foundation for a case study on successful supportive housing opportunities for low-income elders living in rural areas

In August 2004, Genesis received a $5,500 grant from the Maine Community Foundation to explore the potential of small-scale care facilities for low-income elders living in rural areas. The grant will allow Genesis to conduct a case study that details the process of developing and managing Adult Family Care Homes (AFCHs), assesses impacts of the homes, identifies innovations and common ingredients of success for community-based AFCHs, and highlights challenges to their growth and sustainability. The case study and its dissemination are central to efforts to:

  • improve the legal and regulatory environment in which AFCHs currently operate,
  • assist other rural communities in Maine as they struggle to provide options for low-income frail elders, and
  • enhance the sustainability of existing AFCHs.

In sum, the goal is to help ensure that a greater number of low-income rural elders will have the opportunity to maintain quality of life and stay closer to home when independent living is no longer an option.
